Cieszyn (Teschen), Poland
middle of the 17th century
Iron, wood, ivory, mother of pearl, forging, grinding, engraving, encrustation
rifle length 115 cm, barrel length 91 cm, 12 mm calibre
The octagonal barrel is grooved with eight grooves on the inside. Sights are placed on top of the barrel, at the front and the back. On the barrel extension the number 53 is carved in. The firing mechanism is decorated with engraved ornaments and imaginary animals. Judging by the make and decorations of the flint holder and lid of the powder pan, which do not match the other parts of the mechanism, they were probably replaced at a later date. The butt is made of mahogany and its whole surface is decorated with encrustation in mother of pearl and ivory, depicting hunting scenes, floral and flowery motifs and imaginary figures. The right side of the butt holds a box for accessories with a lid. The wooden ramrod is reinforced with ivory on the top.
