Illyrian rug

    picture-1

    Woollen yarn
    1843
length 515 cm, width 415 cm

On a white base 35 rosettes embroidered with multicoloured yarn. Five rosettes show the coats of arms of Slavonia, Croatia and Dalmatia, the Illyrian coat of arms and baron Kulmer's coat of arms. The rest of the rosettes show flower bouquets and starlets. A red border with an inscription surrounds the rug: DOMOROCU B. FRANJI KULMERU. ZA MUZEVNO SLOVO. OD KCERIH DOMOVINE. MDCCCXLIII. ISKRENE HVALE ZNAK.

The rug was embroidered by patriotic women, together with Sidonija Rubido, for Franjo Kulmer as a token of gratitude for his resistance to the prevalence of the Hungarian language at the parliament session in Pressburg in 1843. The Bavarian painter Thugut Heinrich selected the colours for the rug.
