William Janszoon Blaeu
beginning of the 17th century
height 51 cm, circumference 108 cm
Model of the Earth showing the continents and oceans in accordance with knowledge of their position at the beginning of the 17th century. The following information is arranged in concentric circles on a wooden ring: degrees of latitude, astrological symbols with appropriate images and Latin names, a parallel calendar with dates arranged according to the Gregorian and ancient calendar, as well as a calendar of the phases of the Moon. Apart from the points of the compass with Greek and Latin names, Dutch names for points of the compass can also be found there. The globe itself has vignettes with praises to great explorers of the world, Columbus, A. Vespucci, F. Magellan, Cortes and Vasco da Gama with the years when they discovered new worlds. Accompanying the dedication by the author to the gentlemen from the United Provinces of Lower Germany, there is an instruction to the observer which states that the globe was made according to completely new information.
It is presumed that the globe came from the Zrinski library in Cakovec, although all information regarding its origin has been lost.
