Regensburg (Germany)
drawn by Johann Friedrich Fischer
1663
Paper, pen drawing in red ink
26.1 x 18.6 cm
A man shown to the waist, standing, turned a quarter to the right. His long hair, parted in the middle, reached down to his shoulders, big eyes, and long pointed moustache. Dressed in a simple jacket with buttons, a cape thrown over his left shoulder. In his right hand he holds a raised short sabre. The inscription in the bottom reads: Recht eigentliche und nach dem Leben gestochte Bildung dess beruhmten und / Tapfern Gravens Peter von Serin jetzigen Ungarischen Generalissini Herren / Brudern und Comendanten in de(...illegible) beruffenen neuer Vestung Serin war. Inscription on the back: Penna delineabat Ratispona m Comitus die 9 Decembris st. ret: Anno 1663. Joannis Fridricus Fischer Otranto - Mis(...illegible).
After his brother Nikola's death, Petar Zrinski became the sole head of the powerful Zrinski family, connected with marriage ties to the Frankopan family. Because of his involvement in a conspiracy against the centralist policy of the Vienna court he was beheaded at Wiener Neustadt together with his brother-in-law Fran Krsto Frankopan and nobleman Petar Nadasdy. The huge Zrinski family estates were confiscated.
Johann Friedrich Fischer is not to be found in reference manuals on artists. Judging by the somewhat clumsy manner in which the body and hands are placed, this might be the work of an amateur artists, who had drawn Petar Zrinski during his stay at Regensburg (Germany) in December of 1663.
The time, place and means of acquisition are unknown, but the drawing was probably acquired after 1912.
