1893-1918
cross diameter 49 mm, small sash width 52 mm
The order was founded by the Montenegrin Prince Danilo I on April 23rd (May 5th) 1853, after the end of the war against the Turks (1852-1853), after which Montenegro had gained independence.
The order mark is in the shape of a Greek cross with protruding and rounded arms filled with multicoloured enamel. Above the cross is a gilded princely coronet. The heads are enamelled in blue in the middle, surrounded by a thin red and white edge. Obverse: a round medallion is placed in the middle of the cross. The middle of the medallion consists of a gold monogram: DI with a prince's coronet, placed on a red enamelled ground. A golden ring and a blue enamelled field holding a round inscription surround the composition: KNJAZ CRNOGORSKII. Reverse: in the centre of the medallion the years 1852-3 are inscribed, made of gold, also on red ground. A gold ring and a blue enamelled field with a round inscription surround the composition: ZA NEZAVISIMOST CRNE GORE. The order was worn on a white sash with two dark red stripes.
