The door of the Bakac Tower

    picture-1

    Zagreb
    about 1517
    Wood, iron, trimmed, embossed
    245 x 145 x 5 cm

Massive oak single door with rounded upper part. The outer side is covered with massive iron sheets fixed to the wood with massive nails. It seems that this door had closed the entrance to the Bakac Tower, which was finished in 1517. It is known that single doors on burgs and fortifications were made in a traditional way, so that it is in such cases impossible to date them with any great precision. We cannot with any certainty claim that this was the door put up at the time when the tower was built, because the door was broken down, but was later repaired an identical way.

    Donated by the Zagreb Chapter.
